Just Between Friends - shop, sell, save, smart!

SELL:

WHERE DO I START?

As a consignor you make 60% of your sales and you set the price of each of the items you put in the sale. Your $10 consignor fee will be taken out of your check. (Volunteers make 70% of their sales!)  With 4 full days of selling opportunities, your hard work pays off!  Our average consignor check for the Fall  2012 event was over $450

Follow these Step by Step Instructions to get started selling with JBF TODAY!

1. Sign up to create your JBF account: The system will automatically assign you a universal consignor #. Be sure to click "Consignor" when asked how you want to particpate.

2. Log in to your profile and click on "ENTER MY TAGS"  in the green navigation bar to access/create your tagging account.

3. Get organized and tag your items. Review carefully How to Prepare and Tag Your Items (on the right side of the page), watch our Tagging Videos and consult our How to Price Information.

4. Drop off your items. Bring your items to the sale during any of the Drop-Off Times (see drop off information).

5. Volunteer! Shop BEFORE the consignors AND the public and earn an extra 10% on your consigned items!

6. Shop! Come to the consignor presale and shop BEFORE the sale opens to the public. Check out the full sale schedule here.

7. Pick up any unsold items after the sale or donate them to our charity partners (see pick up information).

8. Collect your check! We'll mail you a check within 2 weeks of the sale!

9. Spread the word! Let your family and friends know you're consigning at the San Mateo JBF sale. They'll tell their friends, who in turn will tell theirs, and so on. It's word of mouth, and it works for you. The more friends and family you send to the sale, the better the sale will be! More traffic means more items get sold and we can do more to support Northern Nevada families through our local charity.

Spreading the word = more shoppers = more $$ in your pocket!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO TAG!

Outlined below are resources and guidelines to help you get started. More detailed info can be found on the right hand side of this page:

Print your tags using the following guidelines:

  • All tags must be created using our free on line tagging site. To enter, go to your PROFILE (top right corner of page) and go to ENTER TAGS
  • Use only white or light pastel  8.5 X 11 CARDSTOCK, 67lb minimum. No regular copy paper or glitter paper will be accepted.
  • Use the Print Tags (Alternative) to print 6 tags per sheet versus 4 with the Print Tags method. Adobe Acrobat must be installed on your printer to use this option.
  • Please print with best quality to ensure the items can be read by scanners.
  • Do not shrink tag size as they cannot be read by scanners.

TIP: If you cannot print your tags at home please consider using a friend’s, relative’s or the library's computer/printer for your bar-coded tags.

Tagging with safety pins: Please use size 2 (1 1/2") or larger safety pins; no straight pins or small gold ones. Remember all multi-piece clothing items must be safety pinned together through all pieces. This will prevent your items from separating.

Tagging with a tagging gun:  We highly recommend using a tagging gun! It makes tagging much more efficient, and it leaves almost no markings when used properly. To purchase a tagging gun, please email Sarah or click here.

All tags should be put through the garment's original tag at the back of the neck or waist. If a garment tag does not exist, please put the tag through the right underarm seam/waistband seam so that the material is not damaged by the tagging barb. If they gun leaves a hole the item will not be accepted.

The tag needs to hang on the right side of the garment (when looking at the item) whenever possible since all other tags will be on that side.

Hanging instructions:
• Clothing should be placed on the hanger in the direction of "?" mark.

• Please hang size 0-6mo garments on child size hangers. Use adult size hangers when appropriate - to prevent the item(s) from falling off of hangers.

• Safety pin clothing sets securely with pants hung on the backside of the shirt, so both pieces can be viewed without unpinning them.

• Safety pin through BOTH pieces AND through the hanger (this will prevent pants from weighing down the shirt and causing a possible tear).

• You can also use 2 hangers to display a "set", securing the tops of the hangers together with a rubberband or zip tie.

• Please safety pin pants to the top part of the hanger so the garment will not slide.

Hangers: (Plastic or wire hangers are acceptable.) Everything that can be hung on a hanger, should be put on a hanger (this includes pj's, sleepers), This allows the shopper to better view your items, without having to take things out of plastic baggies to do so (clothing in bags will not be accepted).

You do not need to purchase pant hangers. To attach pants to wire hangers, simply use safety pins and fasten pants to the top part of the hanger so the garment will not slide.

Many local merchants give their hangers away ~ just call them before you go out to make sure they have an ample supply.

Hangers will not be returned on clothing that is sold.

  • What supplies are needed
  • How to prep your items
  • Entering tags in the online tagging system
  • Where to attach tags

Order a tagging gun here via paypal.  $16 includes tagging gun/1000 barbs/shipping.

Supplies You'll Need

Tagging is easy and only a few basic materials are needed. Many of these supplies can be found around your home or picked up at the dollar store or on sale at various stores for very cheap.

  • White/light pastel cardstock - 65lb min. (standard paper & colored card stock will not be accepted)
  • Color printer is preferred but black and white is OK (hand-written tags are not acceptable)
  • Safety pins or tagging gun
  • Hangers
  • Packing tape
  • Resealable baggies
  • Zip-ties and/or string
  • Hole punch

You must tag all items using our online tagging and barcoding system.

Before you begin:

1. Please make sure that your NEW universal consignor number is correct on every tag.

2. We recommend bringing 50 items or $150 worth of merchandise to make it worth your time.

3. All Seasons clothing will be accepted at this sale. We accept Girls sizes preemie - 18/20 and Boys sizes preemie - 20
No Juniors or Adult clothing except maternity.

4. You set your own price on all items. See pricing guidelines.

5. We have a $3 rule for all hanging items. Group items together (you can put 2-3 shirts OR 2-3 pairs of pants on the same hanger) to bring the price up to $3 if need be.

6. If you decide to NOT let your item go for half price, it will print a red star on the tag. This tells the customer that the item will remain Full Price throughout the sale. Please be selective on the items that you star, since items with no stars tend to sell better on the discount days. If you are donating your items at the end of the sale, please do not choose for your item to remain full price.

7. If you want to donate your unsold items at the end of the sale, choose the donate option. Any items not picked up during consignor pick up times will be donated.

8. We NO LONGER ACCEPT clothing items such as sleepers, onsies etc. in ziploc bacs. All clothing items MUST be hung on a hanger.

8. You can use plastic or wire hangers and can purchase hangers and supplies at Walmart, Target and the Dollar store etc. JBF also offers supplies: 1 1/2 inch safety pins - 200/$3. Click here to purchase a tagging gun or contact sarahfierro@jbfsale.com.

9. You can puchase cardstock at Walmart. We accept light pastel and white cardstock.

10. Please do not tape over the barcode as it may not scan properly.

The 1 of X tag is the ONLY tag that shoud keep the price on it. On all of the other tags, write "2 of X", "3 of X" etc. and CROSS OFF the price (so no one will buy that one without knowing it is a set).

•Only use multiple tags for separate pieces, like a table and chair set; do NOT use multiple tags for items that are attached together or clothing.

•For toys left outdoors, they must be in great shape, not sun worn and "weather stained". Mr. Clean magic erasers found in the cleaning aisle work well on toys and do wonders for outdoor toys! Spend a little time cleaning and your toys are SURE to sell!
.
Note: Attach tag to item with clear packing tape, safety pin, or by punching a hole in the top of the tag and securing with ribbon.
Note: Place a piece of tape on tag before punching a hole. This will reinforce the tag so that it is not easily torn off your item.

PREPARING AND TAGGING: SHOES

Each pair of shoes will go through a strict inspection during consignor drop off. We will be very picky concerning acceptance of shoes.

Consignors will take shoes to the shoe table, where an inspection volunteer will be looking for the following (see below). After passing inspection your shoes will be placed on the sales tables by our volunteers. Any shoes not accepted will be placed at the checkout table for you to take home or donate.

Shoe guidelines:

• We accept newborn thru big kid's youth size 8

• All Season shoes will be accepted at the sale.

• Shoes must be in near perfect condition-we will be very picky (they do not have to be brand new...but look like new from top to bottom)

• Athletic cleats that are clean and in very good condition.

• Dance, tap and ballet shoes.

• Dressy "Sunday" shoes (without scuff marks)

We can NOT accept:

• Shoes above youth size 8

• Shoes that look worn, have any sign of dirt, debris or scuff marks. (please don't even go to the trouble to tag them, as we can not accept them)

How to prepare Shoes:

• Connect shoes together with zip ties or strong ribbon to prevent lost shoes and tags. Do this before you arrive at drop off.

• Do not place shoes in bags or boxes.

• Attach the price tag with a large safety pin or you can hole punch the top of the tag and attach the tag onto the shoes with a zip-tie or strong ribbon.

IMPORTANT: Tags MUST be reinforced by placing a piece of packing tape around the top of the tag before pinning.

• Clean all dirt and debris from shoes...including the bottom...wash them if needed. Magic erasers will remove scuff marks from most shoes.

Be PICKY on shoes.
Please be aware of our goal... to be the BEST in the consignment business. Shoes will go through their own inspection. Shoes will be placed on the sale tables by our inspectors.

PREPARING AND TAGGING: CLOTHING

• Girls Preemie - 18/20
   Boys Preemie - 20
   Maternity

• Juniors, Women's and Men's clothing is not accepted.

• Maternity wear (all seasons). Due to limited rack space, Please only bring your best. We will not accept outdated Maternity clothes as they do not sell. Please do not tag them. We are looking for Gap, Old Navy, Mimi, Pea in the Pod & Boutique brands etc. Please secure the tops with safety pins if they have a tendency to fall off the hanger. Breastfeeding tops are accepted with maternity clothing.

• Other Maternity Items: belly bands, breast pumps, pregnancy books, etc. sell very well.

• Check for stains, holes and tears.

• Clean and press items.

• All Multi piece clothing items are required to be safety pinned together through all pieces. (if selling item with an accessory such as a hat or pair of socks, safety pin accessory to clothing item)

• Replace missing buttons, sew loose hems and seams, and clip loose threads.

• Button all buttons, snap all snaps, zip all zippers.

• Sleepers, gowns, and onesies may no longer be placed in Ziploc bags. This change will free up more floor space as well as make these items easier to inspect and easier to purchase since buyers will be able to see all the pieces.

•All sleepers, gowns, onesies and pajamas should be hung on appropriate sized hangers.

•You may include up to 3 sleepers/pajamas/gowns or up to 5 onesies per hanger.

•For sets, first hang one sleeper, then pin the second or third sleeper to the back pinning THROUGH BOTH the sleeper and the TOP angled part of the hanger. Do NOT just pin through the sleepers or it will hang funny and pull on the first sleeper.

•Clearly list all pieces included on the tag description for sets

•Please make extra sure you have no stains on the neck or crotch area.

• Sort all clothing by gender and size for drop off.

Hangers may be plastic tube or wire. When hanging pants, attach safety pins to the TOP part of the hanger to ensure that pant will not slide. The best hangers to use for pants are clip hangers like the ones used in department stores. Clothing items are sold on hangers, so hangers will not be returned to consignor. However, unsold clothing will be returned on hangers. Hangers can be found inexpensively at most discount stores such as Wal-Mart and Dollar Stores. Several department stores will give you leftover hangers. If you need a lot, you could ask to purchase them.

• Clothing should be hung with the hanger hook pointing left. (hanger will resemble a question mark when looking at front of item)

• Hang size 0-5 on child-size hangers. Larger clothing (usually size 6-14) should be hung on adult-size hangers.

• If hanging shirt and pant set on 1 hanger, safety pin thru both clothing pieces AND through the top of hanger (this will prevent pants from weighing down the shirt and causing a possible tear). DO NOT safety pin pants to the bottom of the shirt OR bottom of the hanger.

• You can Rubber band hangers together if selling multi piece items on multiple hangers. (remember to safety pin items together)

Tag Gun: If you are interested in ordering a tag gun, click here or contact us. Dennison and Arrow seem to be good brands (get the 2" size barbs). Remember to be very careful when using a tag gun and tag through the size tag or right armpit seam, since we will not accept clothing with holes.

• Safety pins: Please use 2 1/2" or larger safety pins: NO straight pins or small gold safety pins.

Tag Location: Attach tag with a safety pin to the upper right pocket area of the shirt or upper right front of pants. You can punch a hole at the top of the tag to make it easier to slide the safety pin through. *If you use a tag gun please insert the gun in a tag/label or inside seam (right armpit seam, left for real) NOT through part of the clothing (to avoid making a hole or tear in the clothing). Also, pull on the tag to make sure it is properly secured and will not come off easily.

• Tags MUST be pulled out (not tucked inside clothing) so they are easily visible.

Note: Sets sell well so match things up if you can. Make sure that the sizes are the same.
Note: As kids reach the pre-teen sizes (14 and up), they are very particular. Clothing must be in excellent condition and very CURRENT style.

They're your items, you name the price! OK, easier said than done, right? Read this section for:

  • Tips on how to price your items
  • JBF suggested pricing…

This is a very common question, especially for those who haven't consigned before. There are several ways below we can help. But first, a few suggestions:

First: Are you ready to get rid of this item and not look back? Often when items show up at the sale that are overpriced, it's because that mom (or the kiddo) really loved that piece. If an item really tugs at your heartstrings, put it back in the tote and move on to the items you are really ready to sell and not bring back into your house.

Second: What would you pay for the exact same item? If you wouldn't be willing pay what you are asking, our shoppers won't either.

Third: What is that item going for in the stores right now? 1/4 to 1/3 of retail price is a good place to start. Don't price it for more than a shopper could go buy it for new today. Some stores almost always have certain brands 50% off. That 50% off price should be considered the retail price you take 1/4 to 1/3 of, not the full marked price that nobody actually pays.

Rules to remember:

•Consignors Golden Rule: Don't sell what you wouldn't buy!

•We recommend using Google Shopping and Ebay to gauge market prices for second hand items. Diapers.com and Walmart.com are also great websites to visit. You can also visit the manufacturers websites to determine approximate retail value if you are unsure what you originally paid.

•Hanging items have a $3 minimum price. Group items together (you can put 2-3 shirts OR 2-3 pairs of pants on the same hanger) to bring the price up to $3 if need be.

•Only price in $.50 increments (no items ending in $.99, only $.00 or $.50)

•Boys clothing typically sell for less than girls, so price accordingly.

•Keep in mind the brand/label of your clothing and price accordingly.

•We will not accept items that are grossly overpriced. Our shoppers are smart, and come to JBF to find the best stuff at the best prices, and we depend on our consignors to provide that for them.

Click here for a pricing guide. This will provide a great starting point, as suggested prices are divided by brand (for clothing), and good ranges of prices for toys, equipment and more. If you have a specific piece of equipment or large item you want some advice on how to price, be sure and e-mail us the details, we'll be glad to help!

Watch a short video explaining our Pricing Guidelines.

Remember, these are just guidelines, ultimately the decision on how to price your items is yours.

The Ins and Outs of Drop Off

Park your car FIRST and come inside. The first thing you should do is check in at the Consignor Check-in and Information Table. One of our friendly staff will be there to greet you and provide you with some quick information to review. We will have a limited amount of rolling racks available to help you bring your items in. You may want to bring a wagon or cart to use to bring in your items. If you have very large items (or have health concerns), please ask for assistance. We would be happy to help you.

Allow approximately 1 hour for drop off. Please be patient and plan accordingly. This time varies depending on how many others arrive to drop off and how many items you have. The busiest times are the first and last hours of consignor drop off. Before you arrive at the sale please ensure that all of your items are tagged and ready. We do not have the time or space to assist with this at check-in.

Remember to snap all snaps, button all buttons, and safety pin multi-piece items together.

One of the most important aspects of the JBF sale is our inspection. JBF saves you time and money by accepting only high quality items. We can not accept items that are tagged incorrectly (please make sure that you use cardstock to print your tags, we can not accept paper tags since they are easily torn from items). Clothing will be checked to ensure there are no stains, missing buttons, broken zippers, that items are in style and not too worn and clothing is hung correctly. Toys and gear will be checked to make sure there are batteries and that they are clean and not recalled. Please do not be offended if an item is given back to you. We want to ensure the highest quality possible for the sale. (click here to review the "merchandise prep" page)

After inspection you will place your items in the appropriate area on the sales floor. This part does not take long if your items are pre-sorted.

After you have placed your items on the sales floor, you will check out at the volunteer/check out table. Here you will pick up any items that were rejected during inspection and you will also receive your presale passes here.

*Yes, you can have a friend or family member drop your items off for you if you are unable to do it. Please fill out the consignor waiver and send it along with them.

Express Drop Off:

This service was designed for those moms who don't mind tagging their own items but have a hard time dropping them off.

Make an appointment, show up and a volunteer will assist you in unloading your car. We'll take it from there! No standing in line for inspections, putting your items away, any of that. This process will take you about 10 minutes (or less!) The fee for this service comes directly out of your check, so no out-of-pocket cost, just convenience!

Express Drop-Off Fees: (fee includes your $10 consignor fee)

Up to 250 items-$30

251-500 items-$45

To determine the fee items will be counted during inspection.
